Key #4 to Thriving with Bipolar Disorder

Having a Good Doctor

Key #4 to Thriving with Bipolar Disorder is the Good Doctor.

There is truth that bipolar disorder responds well to medication. It is primarily a chemical imbalance in the brain. Having a great psychiatrist “in your corner” is the best blessing for a bipolar individual. Perhaps a psychiatrist is more important than family, society or friends. But without these three things, it will be hard to incorporate a disciplined medication regimen into one’s life. Family, society and friends provide the much-needed positive structure into an otherwise chaotic life. They allow one to take different medications, in different dosages, at different times, exactly as prescribed by the doctor.

However, the biggest problem is dealing with bipolar individuals who refuse to take medication. Oftentimes, they do not take medication because it is “a crutch” and a sign of “damaged goods.” Then what is the alternative? Does one want a life of purpose, positivity and direction, or one of aimlessness, destructiveness and disorder? Then when they do take it, bipolar individuals will do so until they feel better, and then decide they do not need it, and stop taking the medication, which leads to chaos and disaster. If patients are not willing to get better, then they will not get better. It starts with bipolar individuals and taking their ego out of the equation, realizing the problem exists, listening to the good doctors, and obeying their instructions.

Consider the advice of your doctors and realize they are there to help you, as is their professional calling, so form a “therapeutic alliance” with them. Don’t give up on yourself but be willing to heed what others around you say. There will always be a light at the end of the tunnel, but sometimes we all need help getting there.
